“What drew me to training with Guy initially was his inclusive ethos. I really wanted to train, but was really nervous about getting started, and knew it would require a very special type of person to help me get there. I’m a gay, fat (reclaiming that word), dyspraxic exercise-hating woman who suffers from anxiety, depression and a hormone disorder. I’m what you might call a tricky customer. But from the moment I met Guy there was no sense of any “should bes” or “ideals”, he just met me, found out exactly what I wanted to achieve and worked with me to discover the best way to get there.

“I am non binary and asked Guy to put together a manageable plan to help me achieve some body goals. Guy has been amazing - fun to work with, respects and understands and listens to what I am trying to achieve, and the plan has been so good, it fits into my week and i even look forward to going to the gym 😱 and the results are great!”

“I found that working with Guy made the gym less intimidating, and gave me a much better understanding of my body (and bad back)! The exercise programme he designed allowed me to achieve goals I'd never even set out to do. For example, I could deadlift my body weight and do a pull up after a few months. If you want to train your body in a healthy and sustainable way, then I couldn't recommend Guy enough!”

“I have experienced lots of crap in gyms over the years (assumptions around who I am, and what my goals and limitations might be) and working with Guy is a breath of fresh air as there is no gender-based crap at all - just solid, well researched advice, committed support, empathy, humour and encouragement. Guy actively challenges outdated but prevalent gym norms, taking care not to feed into cultural ideas of what a body should look like or what different bodies should and shouldn't do. I enjoyed the PT sessions so much, I barely noticed how fit I had got - until one week when I lifted my own body weight for the first time and then steamed up a steep hill carrying a huge, heavy backpack and barely broke a sweat.”

“One of my favourite moments actually happened shortly after our training sessions came to an end, I attended a HIIT class run by Guy where we were using kettlebells. As a result of all the training we had done (LOTS of kettle bell swings/squats/bicep curls etc.) I was able to use a 20kg kettlebell for the whole hour session. I remember making eye contact with Guy at the end of the class and there was a moment where we both acknowledged how far I had come, and just how much stronger I was, it’s one of the proudest moments in my life to date.

“I love that Guy offers evidence-based workouts that are completely focused on meaningful functional goals for me, like digging my allotment. He also coached me during nine months of pregnancy and I was able to maintain strength and mobility safely and effectively throughout and never experienced any of the back, hip or pelvic floor issues that are so common perinatally; when I then needed to adapt my training schedule around a baby, he was incredibly flexible.”

“I felt in safe hands with Guy. I knew he’d done a lot of research and is part of a group who work with post pregnant bodies and that really came through in his approach. He’s very easy going and friendly and totally committed to ensuring we were working towards my goals. I also felt relaxed because he’s a feminist and is very respectful and thoughtful of boundaries to do with bodies and body image. None of the work I was doing was encouraged from an aesthetic and body shaming point of view but from following my lead in what I wanted to achieve and a passion for the fascinating bodies that we have!”

“The personal training made an immediate difference and I doubled my deadlift personal best within a week as well as improving my bench technique. He worked out a routine that I can do regularly that is tailored to me and will help me with my sporting and life goals. As a result of my training I have noticed a big improvement in my running times and feel safer and stronger when playing sports and in my everyday life.”

Every day I trained I could feel immediate progress and every session I could feel more and more passion for training and fitness coming back. I was very soon squatting and dead-lifting more than I ever had, running 2km in 10 minutes and even managed a life goal of repping multiple chin ups! However, I think the thing that sets Guy apart for me was the relaxed and enthusiastic approach to training. As somebody who has previously been used to hard training, I didn't need somebody to be shouting at me during every rep or screaming encouragement at me. Instead, Guy took on a role of coach, and with a very detailed eye, showed me all the technical elements of each lift and what could be improved on each set. During breaks between sets we talked about training philosophies, mobility and wider cultural aspects of training which really impacted me, and which I still apply to my training to this day.

I would recommend Guy to anyone looking for a body-positive, non judgemental coach. As a very non athletic person, I was nervous when I started working with Guy but he never makes you feel as though you should know something. He is definitely not the ‘shouty’ kind of coach, which is what I was looking for. I was able to focus on exercises that I struggled with and made improvements pretty speedily. I was able to ask lots of questions and gained real understanding about what I was doing and the benefits. I have ended up feeling stronger and able to set new goals for future progressed, armed with lots of new knowledge.”

“I love weight training because it makes me feel strong in my body and also gives me a great sense of calm in my mind afterwards. We work very technically with the weights and develop these skills over a period of time so that every time a sequence improves and gets better and better. I am so appreciative to Guy for accepting me as I am, and not putting me in any boxes or telling me what I should be (or not) achieving or doing. It is very refreshing to feel so positive about myself every time I leave the gym after a training session.

“When we started I had never deadlifted and I couldn’t squat. Now I can deadlift over my body weight and squat with 22.5kg, and I'm sure I will just continue to get stronger. Being a small woman and gaining strength in this way has made me feel a lot more capable in my day to day life, and also helps challenge the notion that small women can't weight lift. Before training with you I was nervous to enter the free weights section of the gym as it seemed to be full of bulky guys, but now I realise that weight training is not just for men who want to get as big as possible. Anyone can benefit from lifting heavy weights.
